So … MTV turned 30 yesterday and I have to say that I am really excited for them. They have done a lot, like aided in making Hip Hop more mainstream and just paving the way for music, news, and what 18-24’s want!

But what I don’t understand is what MTV has become! MTV went from semi-sensinationalized entertainment, like the Real World and the Hills and went to this ignorance on television that is the Jersey Shore!

I am glad that the Jersey Shore is around so that it cane take some of the heat from the city of Detroit, but these kids are overpaid and they are not doing anything to contribute to society or their brand. Lauren Conrad, the most successful, used MTV to catapult her to this celebrity entrepreneur. That’s the stuff that dreams are made of.

Snooki and Pauly D are not contributing at all … the Teen Mom’s of the world are getting arrested for beating up spouses.

MTV has done a lot, but I think MTV is going through a midlife crisis. They are trying to figure out how to maintain themselves as a credible entertainment outlet with the current generation. I do see some changes between my generation and Generation Y – but they are subtle. I mean there’s a reason why Teen Nick is bring 90’s programming back; it’s good quality stuff! MTV needs to just find it’s way back.

I hope they do!

My cousin, KP, got married on Saturday! It was a lot of fun!

My neice went to the Bayou and was shaking her tailfeather!! I absolutely love her personality!!

After the wedding shenanigans, we celebrated Easter with the family. We definitely mixed some colors and got some unique eggs! It was also hilarious to see my nephew and niece do the Easter egg hunt in the house!

I had fun with some girlfriends the past couple of days. It was great catching up and have fun. As I become super old, I have realized that I can't tell my comrades everything.

When I was younger - really yesterday - I thought that everyone would be considered a bestie and be there and keep all of my deepest darkest secrets. I quickly realized that is not always the case. No one has revealed any of my deepest darkest secrets, but people who I thought were going to be part of the permanent cast ended up having only reoccurring roles.

Some folks are meant to be for a season; boyfriends, girlfriends and everything in between. I have become to be okay with this. So when I have updates, I don't do a Twitter or Facebook status update. I only let a few people that I know are going to be worthy. If you tell everyone everything, then the secrets loose their value and the person who you told it to.

My Life Monday: Birthday Weekend

So this weekend marked the anniversary of when I blessed or cursed the world with my presence.

Friday was tons of fun with the ladies! I went to J Alexander's with my besties +1 and we pretty much closed the place down!!

Saturday was interesting because I had to work, but I had fun and I definitely went out to dinner with my fam. That was hilarious! Non-stop laughs at Red Robin!

Sunday was kinda the wind down because I got my brother-in-law to make his famous breakfast, including cheesy grits! :)

Short-Lived Relationship: London

So I had to break up with London due to a couple of different things. I was super excited; it definitely had a lot to do with my class last semester. I am a little upset about it; we have tried so hard but the trip leaves in 2 weeks, but there's nothing else I can do at this point. It's so sad. But this will give me the opportunity to do the stuff that I want to do.

Long-Term Relationship: Boyfriend

So I decided to cut things off with the current (or rather previous) guy. I wasn't happy; things were going the way that I had hoped but I really wanted them to. It seemed that we were both being short-changed and we are settling; I don't want to do that and I don't think he should do that either.

I read the blog, Smitten, on Glamour's website a couple of weeks ago and I saw that this list. I am really excited because I definitely feel that a couple of people have displayed this to me. :)

He smiles at you. A lot.
He laughs at your jokes, even the crappy ones.
He asks questions about you and your life beyond the generic "How you doin'?" or "Good weekend?"
You catch him staring at you. Your face, that is—if he's staring at your boobs or butt, it could just mean he's perving on you.
He's awkward whenever he talks to you. The first time I talked to my wife, I walked into a parking meter. Luckily for me, she found it adorable.
He always uses your name when he talks to you. He knows your name and likes to say it.
He asks you to "hang out" some time. (To a guy, the word date can be like garlic to a vampire, so they'll say "hang out" instead. Whatever you call it, it still means he wants to be around you.)
He calls you on the phone. Most guys hate talking on the phone. If a guy calls you, it means one of three things: you're his best friend, he needs help with his homework, or he has the itchy pants for you.
He acts more respectable and mature when you're around.
He compliments your appearance. "You look nice today" is guyspeak for "I'm attracted to you."

He asks your friends questions about you. He knows they will probably report back to you, but he doesn't care.
He touches you, even subtly—a hand on your arm, a pat on your back, a grab of your shoulders. Humans are naturally drawn to things that attract us—we want to look at them, touch them. If you find a guy's hand on you, especially more than once, that's a huge giveaway that he likes you.
He notices and remembers things about you that most people don't. Your birthday. What you wore on a certain day. Your favorite TV show. When and where you met your best friend. What you had for lunch yesterday. Average Joe won't remember that shit, even if you tell him.

This is definitely how I feel as a graduate student. When I was at Wayne State, I tried to get active and have school spirit but ... it just didn't work for me. I get more excited about hearing about Michigan State making the Rose Bowl than if my graduate school wins the homecoming game!!

There's a reason for that! Undergrads 9/10 times choose their school based on either their specific major or the student life. It aides in your identity ... for me as an admissions counselor, it is important for me to go to games and see events because my students are going to ask what those events are like. However, as a graduate student, my primary concern is getting that extra degree so that I can dominate the world ... or maybe LONDON! LOL.

So I had a barrel of good times this past couple of days!! I am getting ready to ring in 2011 and I was happy to have some time with my friends. I make some changes in 2011 but I don't know what those changes are or what they hold!

Anywho, I went to Grand Rapids with my besties and got a chance to hang out with them! My buddy Christin (who works with Will Ferrel) came by who I haven't seen in like 30 years (well not 30 but you know what I mean)!

Then my homeys GBz and DeKlein hung out and had girlie moments. We even went to a gay bar! That was hilarious!! :)

I feel truly blessed in 2010 and I am going to carry on that feeling in 2011!!

This question, of course, is reflective of the goals we're all supposed to be making for the 365 days that follow New Year's Eve, symbolically beheld as the last night that we're permitted to participate in our usual indulgences, and usually exploited to exaggerate them to the point of unreason.

I don't know the history of this goal-setting tradition, but regardless, the concept is easy to sympathize with. The desire for progress is part of human nature, and in any case, we're made to feel guilty if we don't have plans for the future. The word "action" tends to have an outward and physically manifest connotation, but as a spiritual person, I like to consider its internal elements, as well. I'm a firm believer that activism starts on the inside, mostly because the best thing we can do for others is to fine-tune ourselves. Self-improvement is a hot topic in the privileged world: once we have food to eat, a place to s***, and a certain quantity of free time, we begin to consider personal enrichment. Whether or not such endeavors are actually fruitful is something to be debated...

And now, without further ado, I'll be honored to either amuse or bore you with a list of things I was too lazy to do in 2010. Enjoy!

Contact "E." It's been several years since I've spoken to my father; what makes that significant is that he was the only parent I grew up with. In light of reasons too complicated and unhappy to explain here, I chose to break off communication with him for my own protection. My sense of safety and self-confidence have since prospered greatly, with the help of those who have cared for me. This year, I will make that intimidating phone call in the hope that it engenders some kind of peace...
Forgive Quentin, my partner, for all of the emotional injuries that have resulted from past indelicacies. We've both made mistakes, but I need to realize that we're together because we love each other. Period.
Update my blog on at least a weekly basis! Everyone gets busy sometimes, but drawn-out dry spells are as discouraging for my passion to write as they are for the patience of my readers!
Stop smoking cigarettes. Or at least slowly cut down until I'm no longer dependant.
Save up enough money to make a long-postponed trip to my native land. Familiar faces and spaces are waiting...
Become a legal resident of France. Because trying to survive as an undeclared immigrant is exhausting, difficult, and nerve-racking.
Finish reading all those books that I picked up and nibbled on months ago. Page 50 is not an acceptable destination. For the record, those books are: La Philosophie dans le boudoir, by le Marquis de Sade; Virgin Suicides (French translation), by Jeffrey Eugenides; A Separate Reality (French translation), by Carlos Castaneda; Flash ou le Grand Voyage, by Charles Duchaussois; and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll.
Draw, sketch, color, shade, smudge. Scribbling with pastels is cathartic!
Learn to play an instrument. Maybe the drums, since I love to hit things. Plus, girl drummers are hot.
Give up definitively on self-pity. It... fixes... NOTHING.

Cell Phones & College Classes

Wilkes University did a study that measured text messaging in class … Here are the astonishing results.

95% of students bring their phones to class every day.
91% have used their phones to text message during class time.
Almost half of respondents said it was easy to text in class without instructors being aware.
99% said they should be permitted to retain their cell phones while in class.
62% said they should be allowed to text in class as long as they don’t disturb their classmates. (About 25% of the students stated that texting creates a distraction to those sitting nearby.)
10% said that they have sent or received text messages during exams, and 3 percent admitted to transmitting exam information during a test.

College Humor did a video where if movies had smartphones and the distract changes it would have to the story … it’s pretty funny! But it really got me the thinking how much college arena has changed as a student since I graduated in 2008.

I would NEVER think of sending a text message during a test … a text message last 2 seconds but a failing grade lasts forever. I was talking to my nephew and he was using the phone as a calculator; I want to try to get people to understand that you cell phone shouldn’t be your everything …

Shakespeare Obsession Week Begins!

So I have been working really hard in my Shakespeare: Text and Theory class! Because I feel like I am in a relationship with Shakespeare, I have dedicated this week to him!

It's because of this class I get to go to London in March! Excitement! :)

So for today's Whatsday, I am going to dedicate it to working out! I am doing fake 2-a-days (2 aerobic/cardio classes a day) and I want to look fly when I do it! LOL

Old Navy Activewear: OMG, I swear by this! Ever since Gap, Inc. has added Athleta, everyone else's workout gear has stepped up a notch. I bought this shirt (about to get the other ones); it's super breatheable and it's makes me look a little smaller, too! :)

Lose-it: I have blogged about Lose It application on the iPod/iPhone. I really like it - and it's free! I want them to do a blackberry app, but it's okay!

Hello World!

Sorry it's been a minute. I have been dominating the world and trying to get my life together!

So, my new - now slightly old - job is going well! I am really excited about it. I finally feel like I am making moves in my professional career.
